Eric Atherton

Eric Atherton has just retired from the Ambulance Service in 2016 having completed 40 years of loyal and dedicated service.

Eric joined the Mersey Metropolitan Ambulance Service on 28th June 1976 having been part of the asphalt gang building roads. The road makers were commonly known as “the boys from the blackstuff”.

Having completed his induction Training in Ambulance HQ Quarry Street, Woolton Liverpool; Eric’s was originally posted to Old Swan Station before transferring to Stanhope Street Station.

Eric vividly recalls his first day of operations at Old Swan Station shadowing Peter Whittaker and Peter Chapman. The professionalism of the two Peters inspired Eric to be a great Ambulanceman. This is a reminder to us all of the importance of helping new recruits.

His full career has been serving the public of Liverpool having always stayed in the Liverpool Central Division.

Eric has worked with some great characters over many years but the one he will always be remembered for is his crewmate and friend Vinnie Seddon.
